SE China braces for Typhoon Saola



Taiwan has issued warnings of torrential rain and gale force winds for most of the island, as Typhoon Saola approaches. The Typhoon is expected to move towards southeast China’s coastal regions. Forecasters say rainstorms and gales are likely to affect the provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang on Thursday and Friday.

Saola is the ninth typhoon this year, following close behind Typhoon Vicente which swept over southeast China in recent days.

It’s moving at a slow speed but gaining force.It’s expected to hit the provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang on Thursday evening or during Friday.Local authorities in Fujian say the province is preparing for possible landslides and flooding.

Dong Jianxi, deputy director of China Maritime Forecast Station, said, "The preparations include taking effective preventive measures to avoid disasters. People living in low-lying areas must be evacuated in time."

More than 8,000 people have been evacuated in a pre-emptive response to the typhoon’s approach.

Local authorities and telecommunications companies are working together to send out millions of text messages warning local residents of the typhoon. Neighbouring Zhejiang province has issued a level four emergency warning.
