Thousands battle Philippine floods as death toll climbs

MANILA: Tens of thousands battled neck-deep floods in the Philippines Tuesday as Typhoon Saola continued to bring heavy rains, with the death toll from the storm rising to eight, officials said.

Heavy downpours battered parts of the country for the third day in a row, forcing the evacuation of more than 145,000 people, said civil defence chief Benito Ramos.

UN to visit flood-hit areas in North Korea

A United Nations team will visit flood-hit areas of North Korea to consider possible aid, a UN official says after Pyongyang reported scores dead and tens of thousands homeless.
The country's official news agency on Tuesday published photographs which appeared to show large swathes of submerged land, and people wading through thigh-high water or taking refuge on rooftops.
UN officials already based in the North will visit the two worst-affected counties "to see what help if any the UN country team can provide", said UNICEF's Bangkok-based regional spokesman Christopher de Bono.

Beijing flood death toll 'rises to 77'

The death toll from the worst rains to hit Beijing in more than 60 years has risen to 77, China's official Xinhua news agency said Thursday, more than doubling previous figures.
Many residents of China's sprawling capital had expressed doubts about the official toll of 37 that Beijing authorities announced late Sunday, believing the true figure to be much higher.
Saturday's freak downpour, said to be the heaviest rain since records began in 1951, caused rivers to burst their banks and flood major highways, submerging large numbers of vehicles.

BEIJING (USA TODAY) — The worst rainstorm to hit the Chinese capital in six decades has given rise to widespread anger against officials who are accused of censoring the scope of massive floods.
Government authorities raised the death toll Thursday to 77 from the previous total of 37 but some suspect the toll could be much higher from a deluge Saturday and flash flooding.
But China's state-controlled media continues to publish and broadcast positive news stories about the relief effort while censors delete negative postings online.

MANILA, Philippines – At least 300 families on Friday fled their homes in the island province of Camiguin due to floods.

Heavy rains since Thursday night triggered flooding in several barangays in Mahinog town.

The affected families are currently staying in an evacuation center for fear of flooding. Local disaster management officials have started preparing relief goods in case the rains get worse.
