MANILA, Philippines – At least 300 families on Friday fled their homes in the island province of Camiguin due to floods.
Heavy rains since Thursday night triggered flooding in several barangays in Mahinog town.
The affected families are currently staying in an evacuation center for fear of flooding. Local disaster management officials have started preparing relief goods in case the rains get worse.
Mahinog Mayor Alex Jajalla suspended classes up to high school due to heavy rains that persisted until early morning Friday and caused the province’s rivers to swell.
Jajalla said barangays Poblacion, Hubangon and San Roque were the hardest hit areas.
Flooding was also experienced in the the towns of Catarman, Guinsiliban and Sagay.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the rains were caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat) which was being enhanced by a low pressure area last spotted 450 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar.
PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the LPA may intensify into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
The LPA, however, was forecast to move northward towards Japan and not make landfall in the Philippines. - report from Rod Bolivar, ABS-CBN News Northern Mindanao
